They are coming out with an expansion for WoW, which will completely rework the first areas you have access to in the game. Expansions don't just pop up, you have to have people constantly working on them, building map geometry, placing entities, properly clipping the areas that players aren't supposed to get to, scripting it properly, fixing bugs, and all that other s***.
Anyways, running one server with that much world packed into it takes a lot to maintanence. Running a load of servers with a super world on it takes even more. As I said, WoW gives back to its players in various forms: patches that actually do something (buffs, debuffs, new quests, etc.), expansions (you really can't expand on an FPS), fixed bugs/glitches, more benefits for lower level characters, and others. And you can make add-ons to help you with quests and keeping track of your equipment. Its an environment where you can express your concerns, get them fixed, and help other players by your own scripting.
Plus, even if they do make profits, every company has to have some profits. |
some profit? give me a break, just think about the profit they are making $15 a month from every player on top of the initial cost of the game.
Well as the old saying goes "a fool and his money are easily parted"
Think we will just have to agree to disagree on this.
and as the original post has now been pushed back, here is a quick bump

Given the "disproportionate contribution" that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 provided to Activision Blizzard's well-padded bottom line, it won't come as a surprise that the next Call of Duty game is coming this holiday season. See? You're not surprised.
Activision Blizzard confirmed its plans to "continue annualizing" the first-person shooter franchise with the still-unnamed seventh entry in the billion dollar Call of Duty series, offering little new info. But executives did talk briefly about the game's release window and their desire to see some subscription-style revenue from the series.
"If you think about the successes we have had in other categories on subscriptions, you can get a sense of the direction we want to take that franchise," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said during today's quarterly earnings call, not specifying exactly when it planned to take such steps. Execs expected a less "friendly" release window in 2010 than the one that Modern Warfare 2 had in 2009, when publishers, including Activision, shifted games from the fourth quarter to the next year. While Activision Blizzard brass did not name the developer of the next major Call of Duty game, developer Treyarch has been linked to the next iteration.
